On Wednesday, April 30th, 8:00am – 3:30pm, students from over 30 schools around the Globe gathered via video conferencing technology to help raise awareness and contributions for the building of a school for street children in Esteli, Nicaragua. Students came together to listen to experts, debate issues, share personal stories, sing, dance, and celebrate and promote education, free of persecution and hardship. Alberta Learning had a remote connection directly to the students in Esteli, Nicaragua. The participants had the opportunity to interact directly with the community for whom they are raising money.
The Honourable Dave Hancock, Alberta’s Minister of Education, was part of the VC for Hope and Education Week. He addressed the changing face of Education in Alberta, Canada and the world. “Through the marvels of technology, learning has been freed from the geographic confines of the classroom. Students now have the opportunity and responsibility to be citizens of the world. We all have the privilege of coming together, through technology like Video Conferencing, and making the world a better place.”
Besides raising awareness to the plight of many children in Nicaragua, we have recognized that many Western countries have a privilege unimagined by most of the world. We can come, in safety and security, to a school within minutes of home for 8 hours a day, 200 days a year. In Nicaragua, many of the children don’t even have a school to go to.
In light of that, VC for Hope is hoping to raise over $10, 000 to contribute to the children’s school in Esteli, Nicaragua.
At our Keewatin Career Development Corporation – KCDC office in La Ronge, SK we hosted on our bridge Kihew Asiny School at Saddle Lake First Nation and INAC - Indian and Northern Affairs in Ottawa. Thank you to Lyle at KNET for connecting us with Ottawa.
The Knowledge and Career Development Network (KCDN) is part of KCDC’s developments from the First Nations SchoolNet program funded by Indian and Northern Affairs Canada. The KCDN is being used to bring video conference programming, distance learning opportunities, and enhanced communication to Aboriginal communities across Saskatchewan and Alberta.
